EverQuest House of Thule

During this weekend's Fan Faire, Sony Online announced plans to release EverQuest: House of Thule, the 17th official commercial expansion pack to the company's flagship MMO that started in 2001. Sign ups for beta testing the expansion have already begun on the EQPlayers.com web site and the beta itself will start on Monday.

Perhaps the big new feature in this expansion pack is the addition of player housing for EverQuest subscribers, something that players of the game have been wanting for a long time. Look for an increase to the level cap for players along with the usual mix of new monsters, quests and items. Fan site EQWire.com states the expansion is due for release on October 14.

Plot:
In Medal of Honor Allied Assault, you are Lt. Mike Powell, member of the famed 1st Ranger Battalion. Following your recruitment by the OSS, you’ll battle through over 20 challenging levels, based on historical military campaigns of World War II.

The seeds of World War II are sown at the end of World War I; the treaties signed at the end of the Great War satisfy neither the victors nor the vanquished. Social, political, and economic changes nurture these seeds over the next 21 years, until they germinate in Poland. Barely 20 years after the "war to end all wars," German dictator Adolph Hitler plunges the world into a war that will take the lives of 50 million people.

In the months following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the United States is in no position to actively pursue the war in Europe. Its army is far below the strength required for the task, there are no U.S. forces in Europe, and the shipping needed to transport a massive invasion force does not exist.

Despite these problems, and within a month of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Churchill meets with Roosevelt at the Arcadia Conference in Washington, D.C., where they agree on a "beat Germany first" strategy. The American leadership acknowledges that the bulk of Allied ground forces will have to confront the German threat as soon and as decisively as possible. From Pearl Harbor to D-Day, American determination to confront the German army never wavers, but events make it clear that half-measures will not lead to victory.

In particular, the disastrous British & Canadian raid on the French port of Dieppe in August 1942, in which half of the attacking force of 6,000 Allied troops become casualties, shows that only a massive, coordinated Allied invasion will provide a firm foothold on the continent. Lieutenant General Albert Wedemeyer of the U.S. Army had reached the same conclusion three months before the Pearl Harbor attack. His "Victory Program" calls for a massive invasion of northwest Europe and a decisive confrontation with the German army. As elaborated by Generals Eisenhower and Marshall, it becomes the nucleus of Operation Overlord, with the invasion date initially set for April 1, 1943.

Dieppe changes all that. It is clear that an adequate buildup for Overlord will take longer than the Allies have hoped. In the interim the Americans agree to participate in joint operations in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. At the Trident Conference, held in Washington, D.C., in May 1943, the date for the Allied invasion of France is tentatively reset for May 1, 1944. In the intervening year, the biggest buildup of men and materiel ever assembled for a military operation takes place in England.

Battle VS Chess

Here are a couple of interesting facts about the game of chess that you might not be aware of. One: It has been around for well over 1,000 years. Two: If you do a search for it on this very Web site, you'll find nearly 400 results. Those are imposing numbers for any game developer looking to do something new in the world of little wooden horses doing battle with tiny clergy hats, but that hasn't stopped TopWare Interactive. Together with publisher SouthPeak, TopWare will soon release Battle vs. Chess, a game that takes the familiar rules of this classic game and throws in more than a few modern trappings.

Plot:
At our most recent meetup with Southpeak, in addition to our hands on time with nail’d and Two Worlds II we got a look at Battle vs Chess. It was described to us as chess with animations akin to Chessmaster and Battle Chess. It uses the Fritz 11 chess engine and is fully licensed, which is good news for those looking for an authentic digital chess experience.

On the surface, it looks like just a shiny and prettied up version of chess, and in Classic mode you get exactly that. There’s also a mode that lets you recreate historic matches if you want to pick up on the strategies experts used. A series of tutorials also helps new players (or those who need some brushing up) acclimate to the rules of the game and details how each piece works and their strategic advantages and disadvantages. The tutorials are interactive, so you’re not just sitting in front of the screen reading blocks of text.

However, there’s also a myriad of modes that distinguish this from other chess games. For those looking for more variety, Random Placement mode puts pieces in different opening places than the standard ones, forcing you to think outside of the box. Recruit mode gives you a random assortment of pieces using point values, meaning that the pieces at your disposal won’t necessarily consist mostly of pawns. There are also puzzles that tasks you with placing certain pieces in certain spots within a given number of turns. Duel mode entails mashing the buttons displayed at the right time in a vis-à-vis battle. Mana mode consists of collecting a certain number of crystals (using the queen) in a specified number of turns, and while it won’t do anything for your chess skills, it seems like it could make for some fun mindless time killing. There’s even a story mode in the form of campaign mode, and it consists of 12 missions for each side. As might be expected, the white pieces acted as the good guys and looked more angelic, while the black pieces took the role of the antagonists and appeared more demonic.

The one that’ll probably stand out most is Battle mode. Each piece has its own lifebar, and each time a piece attacks another, the perspective switches to a closer view of the action. You then take control of your piece (accompanied by a group of soldiers) in a hack and slash battle akin to those in a Dynasty Warriors game, although the battles in this game take place on a smaller battlefield. Pieces lost during battle are out for that game. They get weaker as the battle goes on, so you can’t rely on just one piece to win. As you might be able to surmise, this enables you to button mash your way to victory, making the game accessible to those less than adept at chess.

Features:
* A Challenge for Chess Players of all Levels: Uses the famous Fritz11! chess software, with 10 distinct levels of difficulty
* An Action Twist to a Classic Board Game: The innovative fusion of professional chess software and the deathmatch “Action Mode” result in a strategic action experience unlike anything before
* Primed for Multiplayer Competition: Engage friends and foes via local head-to-head matches or online (select platforms only).
* Vibrant visuals and Exciting Fantasy Setting: Richly crafted army sets and six immersive gameboard environments to choose from with stunning HD visuals and particle effects
* Cinematic Animated Sequences: adding another dimension to the gameplay, the cinematics will pull players into the action of the game

Lost Planet 2

As the follow-up to the critically liked and commercially successful Lost Planet, Lost Planet 2 seems to have everything going for it. Aimed at western audiences, the team at Capcom headed up by Keiji Inafune and Jun Takeuchi promised a return of the well received multiplayer mode from the original game, as well as some much-hyped four player co-op for the entire main campaign. Unfortunately, few lessons seem to have been learned from the original Lost Planet's problems. Instead, Lost Planet 2 offers online play that feels dated in 2010 and adds a host of new issues to the series without fixing what was wrong last time, leading to a game that is in many regards worse than its predecessor.

Plot:
Lost Planet 2, offers deeper insight into the world of E.D.N III, the fictional NEVEC (Neo-Venus Construction) Corporation's attempt to control the flow of Thermal Energy (T-ENG), that is the key to survival on the harsh planet, and the uncertain fate of mankind as they battle the huge insect creatures known as Akrid. A decade has passed since the events of the first game, and the face of E.D.N. III has changed dramatically. Terraforming efforts have been successful and the ice has begun to melt, giving way to lush tropical jungles and harsh unforgiving deserts. Players will enter this new environment and follow the exploits of their own customized snow pirate on their quest to seize control of the changing planet.

Lost Planet 2, like the original game in the series, is a third-person shooter featuring huge boss battles, challenging terrain and the ability to pop in and out of battle mechs, known in-game as Vital Suits. The primary difference in gameplay this time around hinges on the inclusion of RPG gameplay elements. Players can now customize many of the aspects of their playable snow pirate, including his physical attributes, clothing and to a certain extent, weaponry and gestures. Players will control these customized heroes across 6 interconnected episodes, creating a truly unique and interactive experience that changes depending upon the actions of the players involved. Deep Level of Character Customization - Players will have hundreds of different ways to customize their look to truly help them define their character on the battlefield both online and offline. Certain weapons can also be customized to suit individual player style.
Beautiful Massive Environments - Capcom's advanced graphics engine, MT Framework 2.0 brings the game to life with the next step in 3D fidelity and performance.

Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition

BioWare's award-winning fantasy role playing game has shipped more than 3 million units since launch and has offered hungry gamers a content-heavy $40 expansion pack. But if a GameStop listing proves accurate, the Electronic Arts-owned studio may be preparing to combine the two into one package. More Dragon Age? Don't look so surprised. A listing for Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition recently surfaced on GameStop.com. The listing provides nothing in the way of details as to what the package will contain. Typically, premium editions issued months after a game is released contain either expansions or downloadable content for the game. It is likely the Ultimate Edition would contain some--or all--of the numerous Dragon Age DLC packs. According to GameStop, the Ultimate Edition will be released on October 12 at $59.99 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Dragon Age: Origins shipped in November 2009 to critical acclaim and was followed in March of this year by the Awakening expansion pack. It also received a number of smaller paid-for downloadable content expansions. A sequel--due out in March 2011--is currently in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Plot:

Sid Meiers Civilization V

I could try to argue that the new city-state feature in Civilization V makes up for the lack of clearly defined religious and governmental institutions, but sadly I'd be lying. City-states are single city nations that players can either make allies of, ignore, or attack and take over. Gaining their favor grants your society access to their goods and gives you another loyal sword should your nation go to war, but ultimately I found the limited interaction I had with them pretty boring. Sure, it's fun to make a city-state that borders the opposite side of my enemy's nation an ally, watching as they attack them on their flank, but you can't do much else with them. Still, I guess I do kind of get a sick bit of pleasure of even mildly manipulating lesser powers to achieve victory…

Plot:
Winning, actually, is where one of Civilization V's weaknesses come to light. While players can win through either diplomacy (via building the United Nations and being elected the leader), conquest (by taking out all other nations), science (by building a space ship and launching it), culture (by completing five of the policy tree branches), or by having the biggest score in the year 2050, in all the games I played it seemed it was overly difficult to get anything but a timed or military victory against the AI when starting from the earliest period. The AI is simply far too aggressive once they're on your borders, and no amount of gifts or other concessions would keep them from deciding to attack me. Attacking would then force me to focus on my military, taking my cities' production away from building the other scientific or cultural items I needed to win. It's more than a little annoying to play for ten or more hours only to realize that the victory you've been working towards is going to be thwarted by a belligerent computer player. I mean, look, I'm all for the blood of nations on my hands, but sometimes I like to be peaceful too, you know?

Still, if combat is what you're looking for, Civilization V has it in spades, and it's better than ever. In past Civilization games you could "stack" enemies on a space on the board, allowing you to make gigantic armies that players had to smash against one another turn after turn -- with results only really savvy strategy players seemed to fully comprehend. Civ V, on the other hand, doesn't allow stacking at all, forcing players to use more strategy than ever. With hexagon-shaped tiles making up the board, players now maneuver fewer units so that they can surround enemy forces, or use powerful units to choke off key points like mountain passes. Ranged units can also now fire over other units, making players carefully consider every army formation. As a result, combat is vastly more satisfying than it has ever been, feeling much more like a game of chess than a simple game of my-numbers-bigger-than-yours.

World of Warcraft.

Plot:
World of Warcraft: Cataclysm (or Cata for short) is the upcoming third expansion for World of Warcraft. Set primarily in a dramatically reforged Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms on the world of Azeroth, the expansion set follows the return of the evil Dragon Aspect Deathwing the Destroyer -- formerly known as the ancient guardian Neltharion the Earth Warder -- who causes a new Sundering as he makes his cataclysmic re-entrance into the world from Deepholm, the elemental plane of earth.

Cataclysm will return players to the two continents of Azeroth for most of their campaigning, after years away in Outland and Northrend, opening new zones such as Mount Hyjal, the sunken world of Vashj'ir, Deepholm, Uldum and the Twilight Highlands. It will include two new playable races: the worgen from the legendary kingdom of Gilneas for the Alliance, and the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel from the isle of Kezan for the Horde. Flying mounts will finally be usable in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, while the new secondary profession Archaeology will be introduced. Reforging will make its debut in game, while player classes will be fully updated, including new race-class combinations.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm was officially announced on August 21, 2009 at BlizzCon 2009. The "friends & family" phase of the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm alpha began on May 3rd, 2010[2], while closed beta began June 30th, 2010.[3] . Collectors' Edition content and pricing was announced on August 17, 2010[4]. On October 4, 2010, Blizzard Entertainment officially announced the release date for the expansion: December 7, 2010, including for the first time a digital download edition at release.[1]

Major expansion changes and updates:
* Player level cap increased to 85.
* Six new high-level zones: Mount Hyjal and Uldum in Kalimdor; Vashj'ir and the Twilight Highlands in the Eastern Kingdoms; Deepholm in the elemental plane of earth; and the PvP zone and daily quest hub Tol Barad.
* Two new player races, the worgen of Gilneas for the Alliance and the goblins of the Bilgewater Cartel for the Horde. New leveling zones added for these two races include Gilneas, the Isle of Kezan, and the Lost Isles.
* A dramatic alteration of Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms due to the Cataclysm, resulting in massive environmental changes, as well as questing and progression changes, for nearly every zone, resulting in new leveling experiences. This includes new starter areas for the gnomes and Darkspear trolls, faction changes for some zones (such as Hillsbrad Foothills) and, with the environmental redesign, the ability for players to fly on both continents. (The blood elf and draenei content will still be instanced and limited to ground mounts only.)
* Seven new high-level dungeons and three new raid instances, all available in regular and heroic modes (with raids in both 10- and 25-player varieties), as well as two heroic revamps of classic dungeons (Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep). This will also include Blizzard's new Flexible Raid Lock system, a change to raid functionality which includes the ability to move between 10- and 25-player raid groups, combine or split groups, and vary regular & heroic attempts.
* New PvP opportunities including the Tol Barad zone and a PvP-instanced dungeon, Baradin Hold, as well as two new battlegrounds Battle for Gilneas and Twin Peaks.
* Class redesign (coming immediately prior to expansion launch in Patch 4.0.1 but optimized for the expansion) including new talents and spells, simplification of talent trees, and reorganization of class buffs.
* Revamp of character and gear stats, including elimination of some stats and major changes to base stat operability (such as intellect creating spell power, strength and agility affecting attack power, etc.) This includes the addition of Reforging to the game, giving players the ability to add certain stats on gear in return for removal of others.
* New race/class combinations (see the chart below) which will be available to all players in Patch 4.0.3.
* New Archaeology profession.
* Level cap raised on all main and secondary professions to 525, with many new items, patterns and rewards.
* A new Guild advancement system, which includes guild leveling, achievements and rewards.
* Consolidation of previous expansion set currency systems; rewards will include two PvE currencies, Justice and Valor points, as well as two PvP currencies, Honor and Conquest points.
